Why Reviews Matter for Local SEO

Reviews are the third most important local ranking factor according to the annual Local Search Ranking Factors survey. Google uses review quantity, velocity (how fast you get new reviews), diversity (reviews across multiple platforms), and quality (average star rating) as ranking signals. Beyond rankings, reviews directly influence consumer behavior — 87% of consumers read online reviews for local businesses, and 73% of consumers only trust reviews written in the last month. A business with a 4.0-4.5 star average with 50+ reviews typically outperforms a 5.0 business with only 5 reviews, because quantity and recency signal ongoing customer satisfaction.

Review Generation Strategies

  • Ask at the point of maximum satisfaction — right after a successful service delivery, purchase, or positive interaction
  • Make it easy: Send direct Google review links (search 'Google place ID finder' to get your direct review URL)
  • Email follow-ups: Send a personalized review request 1-3 days after purchase/service with a direct link
  • SMS requests: Text-based review requests have 3x higher response rates than email — use with permission
  • In-person requests: Train staff to ask for reviews during checkout or after positive feedback
  • QR codes: Place review QR codes on receipts, business cards, table tents, and signage
  • Never offer incentives for reviews — this violates Google's guidelines and can result in listing suspension
  • Don't buy fake reviews — Google's AI detection is extremely advanced and penalties include listing removal

Responding to Reviews

  • Respond to ALL reviews — both positive and negative. Response rate is a ranking factor
  • Positive reviews: Thank the customer by name, mention specifics about their experience, and invite them back
  • Negative reviews: Respond within 24 hours, apologize sincerely, take the conversation offline by providing a phone number or email, never argue publicly
  • Fake or spam reviews: Report to Google via the 'Flag as inappropriate' option — document evidence of fake reviews
  • Include keywords naturally in responses: 'Thank you for visiting our dental office in downtown Mumbai' reinforces local relevance

Local Link Building Strategies

  • Local Sponsorships: Sponsor local sports teams, charity events, or school programs — you'll get a link from their website
  • Local Business Associations: Join your Chamber of Commerce, BNI groups, or industry associations — members get directory links
  • Local PR & Media: Pitch stories to local newspapers, TV stations, and bloggers — newsworthy events, community involvement, and expert commentary
  • Scholarship Links: Create a small scholarship for local students — educational institutions (.edu links) are very high authority
  • Local Resource Pages: Many cities maintain 'best of' or resource guides — reach out to be included
  • Co-marketing: Partner with complementary local businesses for joint promotions — exchange links and referrals
  • Community Events: Host workshops, seminars, or meetups — event listing sites and local calendars will link to you
  • HARO (Help a Reporter Out): Respond to journalist queries as a local business expert — earn links from major publications
