What is a JSON Formatter?

A JSON formatter (also called a JSON pretty-printer or JSON beautifier) takes compact or minified JSON text and reformats it with consistent indentation and line breaks, making it easy to read. This tool also validates that the JSON is syntactically correct and reports any parsing errors with position information.

How to use this tool

  1. Paste your JSON into the input area, or click Upload JSON / Load sample.
  2. Choose your preferred indentation: 2 spaces, 4 spaces, or tabs.
  3. Click Format JSON to pretty-print, or Minify to compact the output.
  4. Use Validate only to check syntax without changing the output.
  5. Click Copy output to copy the result to your clipboard.

Supported JSON data types

  • Objects - key-value pairs in curly braces
  • Arrays - ordered lists in square brackets
  • Strings - including Unicode and escape sequences (\\n, \\t, \\u0041)
  • Numbers - integers and floating-point values
  • Booleans - true and false
  • Null - the null value

Common JSON errors and how to fix them

  • Trailing comma - JSON does not allow a comma after the last item in an object or array.
  • Single quotes - All strings and keys must use double quotes.
  • Unquoted keys - Object keys must always be strings enclosed in double quotes.
  • Missing comma - Every pair of values in an array or object must be separated by a comma.
  • Comments - Standard JSON does not support comments. Remove them before parsing.

Privacy & Security

All formatting and validation happens entirely in your browser using JavaScript's built-in JSON.parse() and JSON.stringify(). Your JSON is never sent to any server. You can use this tool safely with internal or sensitive data.

How To Use JSON Formatter & Validator Online?

Follow these quick steps to get instant, accurate results in seconds.

1

Paste, upload, or load sample JSON

Input messy, minified, or raw JSON text into the left input editor.

  1. Paste any valid or invalid JSON string from an API response, file, or database.
  2. Click 'Upload JSON' to read local .json files client-side without server upload.
  3. Click 'Load sample' to explore formatted sample objects and arrays.

Choose indentation and click Format or Minify

Beautify for human readability or compact for network payload optimization.

  1. Select 2 spaces (standard), 4 spaces, or Tab indentation.
  2. Click 'Format JSON' to structure with clear line breaks and key hierarchy.
  3. Click 'Minify' to strip all whitespace and reduce byte size for API transmission.

Validate syntax and copy clean output

Detect parsing errors with exact line and column pointers.

  1. If the JSON has errors (missing comma, trailing comma, unquoted key), view the exact line and column pointer.
  2. Click 'Copy output' to copy clean JSON to your clipboard with one click.
  3. Click 'Download JSON' to save the formatted file locally.

Supported Formats & Syntax Examples

Common input data types and real-world representations supported by this tool.

Nested JSON Object

Object

Key-value structure with nested dictionaries and typed fields.

Example Syntax
{
  "status": "success",
  "data": {
    "userId": "usr_9918",
    "tier": "enterprise"
  }
}
Parsed with type validation for booleans, numbers, and strings.

JSON Array of Records

Array

List collection of homogeneous objects commonly returned by REST APIs.

Example Syntax
[
  {"id": 1, "sku": "TOOL-01", "stock": 150},
  {"id": 2, "sku": "TOOL-02", "stock": 80}
]
Formatted with array alignment and bracket matching.

Compact Minified JSON

Minified

Single-line string without whitespace for HTTP headers, cookies, and production payloads.

Example Syntax
{"api":"v2","env":"production","traceId":"tr_8294a"}
Reduces payload size by up to 35% compared to pretty-printed JSON.
