Understanding Universally Unique Identifiers (UUID)

A guide to standard UUID specifications, randomness guarantees, and database indexing optimization.

RFC 4122 (UUID v4)

Version 4 UUIDs are generated from cryptographically strong pseudorandom numbers. Out of 128 bits, 6 bits are reserved for version and variant flags, leaving 122 bits of true entropy.

RFC 9562 (UUID v7) - The Database Game Changer

UUID v7 is designed specifically to replace auto-incrementing integer IDs while retaining time-ordered B-tree performance. Because new records naturally append to the end of index leaf pages, write amplification is drastically reduced.

Bulk Generation Performance

Our tool leverages high-throughput TypedArrays and crypto.getRandomValues to generate hundreds of IDs in milliseconds without freezing UI threads.

How To Use UUID Generator Online?

Follow these quick steps to get instant, accurate results in seconds.

1

Select UUID Version (v4 Random or v7 Time-Ordered)

Pick the standard best suited for your software architecture.

  1. Select UUID v4 for general distributed systems, session IDs, and non-sequential identifiers.
  2. Select UUID v7 (RFC 9562) for database primary keys to ensure optimal B-Tree index sequential insertion.
  3. Set your desired batch quantity (from 1 up to 500 IDs in bulk).

Supported Formats & Syntax Examples

Common input data types and real-world representations supported by this tool.

Standard Canonical UUID v4

RFC 4122

122 bits of cryptographically strong entropy formatted with four hyphens.

Example Syntax
f47ac10b-58cc-4372-a567-0e02b2c3d479
Version nibble is '4' at character 15; variant bits indicate RFC 4122.

Time-Ordered UUID v7

RFC 9562

Timestamp prefix (Unix milliseconds) followed by random entropy for database clustering.

Example Syntax
018f2d59-20b1-7a4e-9b62-4f81029c72e1
Naturally sorted chronologically in SQL B-Tree indexes.

Microsoft GUID Format (Braced)

C# / Windows

Standard canonical UUID wrapped inside opening and closing curly braces.

Example Syntax
{f47ac10b-58cc-4372-a567-0e02b2c3d479}
Compatible with C# Guid.Parse() and registry COM CLSIDs.
