URL Encoder & Decoder
Encode and decode URLs and URL components. Supports three encoding modes: URL component, full URL, and form data. Handles Unicode and percent-encoded sequences correctly.
Encoding type:
What is URL encoding?
URL encoding (percent encoding) converts characters that are not allowed or have special meaning in URLs into a percent sign followed by two hexadecimal digits. For example, a space becomes %20 and an ampersand becomes %26. This ensures that URLs can be transmitted correctly over the internet without ambiguity.
Encoding types explained
- URL component (
encodeURIComponent) - Encodes all characters except letters, digits, and the characters- _ . ! ~ * ' ( ). This is the right choice for encoding individual query parameter values, such as a search term or a URL being passed as a parameter. - Full URL (
encodeURI) - Encodes all characters except those that are valid parts of a URL (it preserves: / ? & = # @etc.). Use this when you want to encode a complete URL without breaking its structure. - Form data - Like
encodeURIComponentbut replaces spaces with+instead of%20. This is theapplication/x-www-form-urlencodedformat used in HTML form submissions.
Common use cases
- Encoding a search query to include in a URL: use URL component encoding.
- Passing a full URL as a query parameter: use URL component encoding on the inner URL.
- Decoding a percent-encoded API response: use URL component decoding.
- Preparing form data for HTTP POST: use form encoding.
Decoding errors
A decoding error occurs when the input contains a malformed percent-encoded sequence, such as %GG (invalid hex digits) or a lone % sign. This tool will report the error and explain the cause. Fix the input by correcting or removing the invalid sequence.
Privacy & Security
All encoding and decoding uses the browser's built-in encodeURIComponent, decodeURIComponent, encodeURI, and decodeURI functions. Nothing is sent to any server.
