UI vs UX vs Product Design

UI (User Interface) Design is the craft of designing the visual layer that users directly interact with - every button, icon, color, font, input field, card, and screen layout you see in an app or website. UI designers take wireframes and turn them into polished, pixel-perfect visual designs. Their work includes selecting color palettes that align with brand identity and accessibility standards, creating typographic hierarchies so users can scan content quickly, designing individual components (buttons, inputs, toggles, cards) with all their interactive states (default, hover, active, disabled, error), and ensuring visual consistency across every screen. In practice, UI designers at companies like Airbnb or Stripe spend most of their time in Figma, creating high-fidelity mockups and maintaining component libraries. They work closely with engineers to ensure what ships matches what was designed. The key deliverables of a UI designer are high-fidelity screen designs, style guides, icon sets, component specifications, and redline documents that show exact spacing, colors, and typography values.

UX (User Experience) Design focuses on the entire journey a user takes when interacting with a product - from the moment they discover it to their ongoing relationship with it. While UI is about how things look, UX is about how things work and feel. UX designers are responsible for conducting user research (interviews, surveys, usability tests), defining user personas and journey maps, creating information architecture (how content is organized and navigated), building wireframes and user flows before visual design begins, and validating solutions through usability testing. A UX designer at Google, for example, might spend weeks interviewing users before a single screen is designed. They identify pain points, map out the ideal user journey, and create low-fidelity wireframes that solve the right problem before any color or typography is applied. The key deliverables include research reports, personas, journey maps, sitemaps, wireframes, and usability test findings.

Product Design is the broadest role - it encompasses both UI and UX while adding business strategy and product thinking to the mix. Product designers own the end-to-end design of features or entire products. They don't just ask 'is this usable?' or 'is this beautiful?' - they also ask 'should we build this at all?' and 'how does this move our business metrics?' At companies like Spotify, Meta, and Shopify, the 'Product Designer' title has largely replaced separate UI/UX roles. Product designers are expected to conduct research, create wireframes AND high-fidelity designs, collaborate deeply with product managers and engineers, think in terms of metrics (conversion rates, retention, task success), and prioritize features based on user needs AND business goals. The key difference is scope: a UI designer owns the visual layer, a UX designer owns the experience layer, and a product designer owns the outcome - they're accountable for whether the feature actually solves the problem and moves a business metric.
