All AI that exists today is Narrow AI. It is very good at one specific task but cannot do anything outside that task. General AI, which could perform any intellectual task a human can, does not exist yet.
Narrow AI vs General AI
Narrow AI (also called Weak AI) is designed to do one specific task well.
Examples: AlphaGo plays Go better than any human, but it cannot play chess. GPT-4 writes excellent text, but it cannot drive a car. A facial recognition system identifies faces, but it cannot translate languages.
General AI (also called Strong AI or AGI) would be a system that can perform any intellectual task a human can. It would learn new skills on its own, reason across completely different domains, and adapt to situations it has never seen.
AGI does not exist today. All current AI systems are Narrow AI.
